Toothache or dental pain is most often caused when nerve of tooth gets irritated . But there are Various risk factor associated to tooth ache like gum diseases, tooth fracture, tooth decay ,injury, sensitive teeth, impacted teeth, etc. So it’s important to rule out the root cause of your pain. If the pain lasts for more than 1 or 2 days, it is best to see a dentist immediately to have it treated.

Until then, the following simple remedies made from ingredients usually available at home may provide temporary relief from the discomfort.

1. Clove oil

Clove is most widely used remedy for toothache. Clove contains Eugenol which acts as a natural anesthetic and said to reduce inflammation. To use this add a small amount of oil on cotton swab and apply on affected tooth. You can also place a clove or clove powder on your teeth directly.

2. Salt water rinse

For many people salt water rinse is effective first line treatment . Warm saline gargles acts as a disinfectant and anti inflammatory, it also removes stuck food and debris in between teeth giving you relief.

A teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water makes effective mouthwash. Rinse it thoroughly for 30 sec. One can repeat this rinse for 3-4 times a day.

3. Ice

Dental pain sometimes is so throbbing that you just need something cold to suppress it. When you apply cold it constricts the blood vessels in that area. This reduces severity of pain temporarily. It also reduces swelling and inflammation around the teeth.

To use it take a ready cool pack or ice cubes in a cloth apply from outside. It can be repeated as and when needed.

4. Peppermint tea

Peppermint is known for its ability to reduce soreness. Like cloves, peppermint has numbing properties that can soothe a toothache. Menthol, which gives peppermint its minty flavor and smell, is also known to be antibacterial.

To use it just add few dry leaves in boiling water, steep it for 20 mins, swish it around the mouth for soothing effect.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric contains a compound called curcumin, it’s known for its antiseptic and anti inflammatory properties. It is used in Ayurveda since ages to relive pain.

To use it dilute a pinch of turmeric with water or alternatively take a pinch of turmeric, salt mix it with mustard oil n apply on affected tooth. Mustard oil helps to keep gums healthy

You can use all these remedies in case of emergencies, having said that it can only give you temporary relief , a proper treatment of tooth is necessary as teeth cannot regenerate itself. Best is to aim for preventative dentistry with proper brushing n flossing and visit your Dentist regularly.
